What Chakra Natures Does Naruto Have? Explained
The Naruto series always had an interesting take on jutsus and powers. That was always the best part of the series, even more than the characters, whose progress I always valued, but it seems that Kishimoto developed the combat part of the series much better. The amount of characters that have been introduced in the Naruto series is countless at this point, and most of them have developed types of jutsus and powers. In this article, we will talk about another aspect of the Naruto series shinobi and discuss what chakra natures Naruto has.
Naruto formerly had only one chakra nature: the prowess in Wind chakra-based jutsus. Rasengan, Rasenshuriken, and others provided Naruto with a great arsenal of jutsus against his opponents. However, when he gained the Six Paths Senjutsu during the Fourth Shinobi War, Naruto gained the power to control all five basic natural elemental transformations and Yin-Yang release.
We will discuss this topic more by mentioning Naruto’s jutsus and chakra natures throughout the series and a few others connected to the titular character. If you are interested in this topic, stay with us until the end of the article.
What is Nature Transformation?
Before we start speculating what chakra nature Naruto possesses, we need to determine the mythos behind this particular power introduced in the Naruto series. First of all, Nature Transformation is really important. According to the official definition from the Naruto series, Nature Transformation is an advanced chakra control form that alters and molds properties of one’s chakra – it determines the jutsus and abilities shinobi can perform.
Of course, Nature Transformation is closely connected to Shape Transformation, which determines the form, movement, and potency of shinobi’s chakra. More specifically, it determines the technique’s shape, range, and purpose.
While Nature Transformation changes the properties of chakra, Shape Transformation changes the form and movement of the technique. There are five basic Nature Transformations introduced in the Naruto series:
- Fire
- Wind
- Lightning
- Earth
- Water
Each element has strengths and weaknesses against the other forms – Fire is stronger than Wind but suffers against Water. Wind beats Lightning but struggles against Fire. Lightning is strong against Earth but is weak against Wind. Earth beats Water but struggles against Lightning, and finally, Water beats Fire but is weaker than Earth.
All this means that, despite the same strength of techniques, shinobi with superior natural element beast their opponent. The prime example is Sasuke’s Chidori, which is definitely weak against Naruto’s Rasengan, but his Fire Release mostly beats Naruto’s Rasengan.
The same logic implies that the same natural elements and jutsus of the same power will cancel each other out. However, if one jutsu is stronger than the other, it will grow even stronger and easily defeat its opponent. Another important aspect of the Nature Transformation is the affinity of the shinobi towards the element.
After Naruto returns to Konoha, Kakashi teaches Naruto about his Nature Transformation affinity in the anime and manga series. The whole episode and chapter are dedicated to teaching the eager shinobi about his affinity and true chakra nature. Kakashi showed Naruto a little trick – a special paper that indicates which natural element a shinobi has an affinity to:
- Wind – the paper will split in two
- Earth – the paper will turn to dirt and crumble away
- Water – the paper will become wet
- Fire – the paper will ignite and turn to ash
- Lightning – the paper will wrinkle
Naruto splits the paper in two and confirms his natural element as Wind. Of course, a whole aspect of the Nature Transformation includes combining the chakra natures, some Kekkei Genkai jutsus, like Haku’s Ice Release. Let’s find out if the Wind is the only element Naruto can use.
What chakra natures does Naruto have?
In the previous paragraph, we confirmed that Naruto has an affinity for Wind Style and that his jutsus and abilities will possess the Wind Style components. Of course, Naruto showcases the Wind Style in the best possible way. Throughout the series, Naruto learns signature jutsus that are pivotal in big fights of the manga and anime series.
Rasengan is the main and, arguably, the most important jutsu in the series, and for our hero as well, since Minato Namikaze is the creator of the jutsu. According to the Naruto series, Minato spent years developing the jutsu, which was considered the highest Shape Transformation possible in the ninja world. The likes of Jiraiya, Minato, and Kakashi failed in combining their own chakra natures, like Lightning. Still, after struggling, Naruto succeeded, something even his skillful mentors and father could not do.
Of course, during the series, we saw multiple upgraded versions of Rasengan, created in the Sage Mode and Tailed Beast Mode, making Naruto extremely powerful. Naruto completed Rasengan’s highest possible Shape Transformation by creating Rasenshuriken, a powerful jutsu that is a signature skill to Naruto and later his son Boruto.
Throughout the series, Naruto learns a lot about himself and his capabilities. The Kyuubi inside of him already made him a strong opponent to any shinobi of the ninja world. Firstly, he controlled Nine-Tailed Beast and gained access to the Tailed Beast Mode, where he developed a better version of Rasengan. Still, the ultimate power came with Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki and him lending Naruto Six Paths chakra that includes the chakra of all Ten-Tailed Beasts.
This feat gave Naruto access to all five Nature Transformations and elements and the ability to combine all elements simultaneously. Of course, that means that Naruto has all five chakra natures, which the Gutsy Ninja regularly used during the Fourth Shinobi War. In one sequence, Naruto used the Shukaku (One-Tailed Beast) variant of the jutsu called Sage Art: Magnet Release Rasengan, where he used Wind and Earth natures simultaneously, signature to shinobi of Sunugakure and Kumogakure.
Naruto managed what no one could in history, and the fact that he managed to gain all five chakra transformation elements that only the Creator of Shinobi had, is a great feat. Naruto is the strongest shinobi in the series and outmatched all his mentors and role models.
In the Boruto series, Naruto lost his biggest ally and source of power, Kurama. With his prowess in Sage Mode and the fact that he still has Six Paths Senjutsu from Hagoromo, Naruto is still a powerful shinobi that most of the ninja world can defeat.
